New Yellow Dog Jazz Club

Hello Yellow Dog Jazzers, as I mentioned in last month’s newsletter I am re-reading a lot of jazz material and was surprised to discover some old jazz club membership cards and was wondering if any of you were also members, so here goes, Doug and Dory Whitfield’s Vieux Carre Jazz Club, The Ace of Jazz Club 135 St Marys Street, The Gerry Brown Jazz Club Station Hotel Totton, The Southampton Jazz Club behind the Angel pub Palmerston Road Southampton, The Friday Traditional Jazz Club British Legion Cranberry Avenue Southampton, The Yellow Dog Jazz Club Portswood Hotel Southampton, the Concorde Club Basset Hotel Southampton. All these cards go back to the 50s. There is a bottle of wine to the first person to contact me who also has ALL of these cards.

My love of art has been re-awakened thanks to Covid19. In 1989 my eldest sister was HM British Consul in Florence and invited me to visit her. I was hesitant to accept as I dreaded being dragged around art galleries and churches, what an idiot I nearly was. Since then I have been to Italy several times visiting Venice, Padua, Bologna, Pisa, Siena and Rome seeing some of the best art ever painted. I have a particular likeness of the work by Caravaggio after seeing two of his paintings in the church of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome using the chiaroscuro style of painting which Rembrandt also used especially on his ‘Night Watch’ which hangs in the Rijks museum in Amsterdam.

I once flew to Rochester New York to see a painting called ‘The Yellow Christ’ by Paul Gauguin the impressionist artist. I have lost count of the times I have been to the National Gallery just to stand in front of The Baptism of Christ by Piero Della Francesca. Apparently, he was a mathematician who used Euclid Geometry in his paintings. Sadly, due to my Sciatica problem I am not able to visit art galleries, but I have lots of art books to keep me going.

Well since my last newsletter I have had a birthday, I am now 61 + VAT. I am normally treated to lunch at my favourite restaurant, Seashells in Hythe, oh well there is always next year

PS If any of you are on a ‘Quiz Team’ and are asked why is the Coronavirus also known as Covid 19 here is the answer, CO=Corona, VI=Virus, D=Disease and 19 =2019 the year it was discovered.

PPS Sleeping comes so natural to me, I could do it with my eyes closed.
