New Yellow Dog Jazz Club

After 13 years at the Fleming Park Bowling club we had to move. Our new club will be at the Southern Parishes Conservative Club, The Hill, Upper Northam Close Hedge End 5030 4BB. I chose our new location as its close to the M3 and M27. Our new location is only a quarter of a mile from junction 7 off the M27 so we are still close to all major roads.

There will be no more street parking as the new club can accommodate 60 cars free of charge. It is my hope that this move will solve my financial problems. Jazz nights will now be on a Friday so our first gig will be on January 24' when New Orleans Heat will be our guests. The exception to this will be for February 29th a Saturday when I have hired the Botley Village Hall for a special one-off gig. It will be my tribute to Bob Champion who was one of three people who most influenced me on learning the beautiful music of New Orleans as a teenager.

John Edgar Mann was another, many times, at the original Yellow Dog I would constantly ask John the names of tunes and never once being rebuked. In the last years of his life he would ask me as his mind was slipping. The third person is Cole Mathieson who without founding the famous Concorde club I would not have been able to listen and enjoy countless number of bands and still do. Should you pop into the club on a Sunday night you will find me sat at the end of the bar.

My Bob Champion tribute is something that I have wanted to do since I re-launched the club in 2006 so moving so close to the Dolphin Hotel the mecca of jazz in the 50s and 60s where Bob would hold court has presented this opportunity. During the 60's Bob also ran his own jazz club at the Great Harry a pub in Warsash. It will be a concert gig as the hail can accommodate over a 100. The band is from Denmark called Doc Houlind's Revival band.

Our December band the Shieldhall Stompers was the surprise of the year who were received favourably by most of you. I think this was because Tony Purse the leader played tunes, we are all familiar with such as The Darktown Strutter's Ball, St Louis Blues, Careless Love and they finished with Mama Don't Allow. At your request they will be back next May.

Happy New Year

P.S. I dream of a world where chickens can cross the road without having their motives questioned.
